Kærnehuset is the old Citizens’ School in Allinge from 1890-91. The building was designed by architect Mathias Bidstrup, who designed many of the old buildings on Bornholm. On this site there used to be a school from 1826 until its demolition in 1890, this was the first foundation-built house in Allinge, apart from the Ammunition House, which later served as a fire station. The old school consisted of 2 classrooms and a teacher’s residence. The teacher had to teach all children from Allinge and Sandvig at the same time. When the new Borgerskole was built it was a very big improvement. The school was built on 2 floors with 2 teachers’ residences on the 1st floor. In 1893 Sandvig got its own school and the children from there were moved to their own school. But despite this, already in 1897 the school had to be extended with an annex, so that there were 6 classrooms in total. The school did not have its own gymnasium so these lessons were spent in a warehouse building (the old fire station) built by Bornholm Militia in 1818. In 1911 the municipality bought the warehouse building and it became the gymnasium for the school. The school was in use until 1957 when a brand new, large and modern school was built on Strandvejen in the middle of the town. Now the children from Allinge and Sandvig were gathered again. After the end of the school, there has been a youth school in the two teacher’s quarters on the first floor, now these premises are the residence of Allinge-Sandvig Town Association, the ground floor is used for many different activities such as gathering place for seniors, bank games, lectures, etc.
