Tejn is the largest fishing village on Bornholm, with a population of around 950 people. In old documents, Tejn has been described back in 1569. At the time, the town was a farming community, consisting only of farmers and a few fishermen.
The description of the inhabitants in the 16th century was not very flattering, quite the opposite. They were referred to as pure scum, very poor and living in poverty and definitely a population to stay far away from.
There are several explanations for why the town is called Tejn. The first records in 1569 refer to the town as Teding, later Theinge, Teign and Tægen have been encountered. The oldest name – Teding – comes from the Old Norse noun tæth or tath, meaning dung or manure. The explanation may be that there were farms with manure spreading their smell throughout the area.
