The small market town of Svaneke is known for its cozy, narrow streets with extremely well-maintained old houses, almost all with red tiled roofs. The city is also referred to as the city of red tiled roofs.
There is virtually no old information about Svaneke before 1500. But it is certain that people lived in the area in the 11th – 13th century, and it is certain that this was also the case back in the Stone Age.
The people who lived in the area in the 11th – 13th century are believed to have been fishermen who settled in areas close to the small narrow natural harbors between the cliffs.
We haven’t been lucky enough to find objects from the 11th – 13th century that can shed some light on the town’s history, but as Svaneke Church dates from the 14th century, it must be assumed that there was a population that wanted a church.
